Job Description

• To report to master on all matters concerning engine department.
• Assists the Master in managing the activities of the vessel’s engineering complement and the day-to-day operations onboard.
• Implement the Company’s Health, Safety and Environment Policy.
• Motivate the crew in the observation of the policy.
• Issue orders in a clear and concise manner such as writing down instructions in a standing order.
• Assist the Master to review safety and pollution prevention activities.
• Assist the Master to review the Company’s SMS.
• Report defects and other matters with implications for safe operations or pollution risk to the Master.
• Assist the Master in reviewing and reporting non-conformities, accidents involving staff or equipment and hazardous situations.
• Assist the Master to ensure records relevant to the SMS are up-to-date, complete and available.
• To report on bunker consumption, engine speed and performance.
• To develop and control plans for the maintenance of technical installations and equipment throughout the vessel.
• To appraise the performance and potential of vessel’s staff in accordance with engine room related procedures.
• To ensure engine room logs are duly entered daily.
• To ensure vessel is adequately bunkered.
• Responsible for bunker operations.
• To ensure that the relevant sections of the Oil Record Book is properly maintained.
• To advise the Master on matters pertaining to seaworthiness of the vessel, with special regard to technical installations and equipment.
• To provide at all times for the safety of personnel whilst operating and maintaining technical installations and equipment.
• To take charge personally in emergencies involving machinery.
• Efficiently manage the maintenance activities of engine department onboard the vessel.
• Ensures that watch keeping is maintained at all times.
• Assist the Master to manage emergency situations onboard the vessel.
• To be fully familiar with condition of the hull and machinery.
• To maintain any Planned Maintenance System up to date and complete all relevant documentation.
• To ensure optimum efficiency in the use of fuel and lubricating oil.
• To ensure that all persons engaged in maintenance work are used to the optimum advantage and follow safe working practices.
• The Chief Engineer is to be present in the Engine Room when the vessel is entering or leaving port, or when working under orders from the Bridge.
• The Chief Engineer is responsible for the proper working of and all repairs to, all engine room and deck machineries, and all electrical equipment.
• To report if there any mechanical limitations or defects.
• To record inventory of shipboard equipment.
• To verify and assess crew are competent to carry out their assign task.
